Master study 2

This is a digital portrait of Barak Obama done by Andrew Hay.

On top is the original.
I first did the values in Photoshop and then painted the whole page on another layer and set the layer option to color. But then everything was skin toned, including the eye and the brow. I couldn't figure out how to change the color of just the eyebrow and the eye. So I erased those parts, made two more layers, painted the erased parts black and brown and changed the opacity and blurred.

  1. looks good. you might try using brushes to add some texture to the skin. I did a study on a artist and found their deviant art page today. On it they had a brush pack that has a brush for that purpose. Its http://adonihs.deviantart.com/art/My-Brush-Pack-118954791

  2. It is so great to see your work here! It totally makes sense the way that you did the value layer and then a color layer. Often times you do have to have a separate layer to get those dark darks back in and set it to multiply blending mode. Layers are awesome, use as many as you need and streamline the process later. For your original you may want to find a good photo of an eye and try these techniques to replicate it. This piece was most certainly done from a photographic reference.
